It can be exceptionally difficult to move a family member or loved one into a nursing home or a long-term care facility.

But, if it is ultimately a choice you must make, it is essential that the facility has a sufficient and professionally trained staff.

Anytime a nursing home does not staff enough care givers, or the facility struggles to maintain continuity in staffing levels – the quality of care for its residents declines rapidly.

Ask employees if they like their jobs and how long they have worked at the specific facility. Ask them if they know what the staff to resident ration is at the home. It is also important to ask if the staffing levels stay the same on the weekends or if the home allows for lower staffing on Saturdays and Sundays.

If employees will not answer these types of questions, or they provide vague answers, you should consider it a warning sign.

We also strongly suggest that you or your family members consider talking to other residents at the home – particularly if the employees prove unhelpful with their responses.

Talk to as many residents as possible and inquire whether about the quality of care they receive and the staffing levels. Are call bells left unanswered? Are the rooms and bedding routinely cleaned? Are the content with their decision to live at the facility?
